It's hard to put the gravity of this show into words for those who've never asked me about my favorite song of all time. While my favorite band seems to change day-to-day, my favorite song of all time has remained Devotchka’s “Queen of the Surface Streets” since I heard it on the “Sleepy-Time Mixtape” CD my dad burned for me when I was 6-years-old.

Devotchka’s music has been the soundtrack throughout so many personal struggles and triumphs, and it’s also been a driving force behind the fleeting thought of running away to join a traveling circus.

If you told 6-year-old Nathan that, for my first time seeing Devotchka live, I would get to be less than 5 feet away from Nick Urata, and I would be responsible for capturing the energy of the band’s performance, I probably would have told you I had bigger things to worry about, like proving that dragons exist. At that age, the concept of delayed gratification was beyond me.

Regardless. I am beyond grateful for Devotchka providing me with both this opportunity and my favorite song, and I can’t wait to build more opportunities like this for myself.

Concert photography continues to prove to me the power of relentless communication, and it’s helped me hone my skills as a visual storyteller beyond anything I’ve done before. I can’t wait to see where else this journey will take me, and what other heroes I’ll get to meet along the way.
