JUNE 18 - In a dynamic display of Meltt's ethereal synth-pop and The Blue Stones' blues-infused rock, Denver's Gothic Theater was alive with the sound of good music as these bands turned up for The Blue Stones' METRO tour.
Meltt opened the show with their ethereal synth-pop, smothering the Gothic in pinks, purples, and reverberating guitars. After a well-received set filled with fan favorites like "Love Again" and "Within You, Within Me," the lights came up, and so did the anticipation; and for good reason. The Blue Stones are known for their quality theatrics-- face paint, red strobes, and the energy of a full band invested in just two dudes. During the intermission, I met a family from Utah who flew out to see The Blue Stones and celebrate their daughter's graduation. To say they were excited would be a gross understatement.
The lights went down, crowd noise went up, and Tarek Jafar and Justin Tessier of The Blue Stones came out to the signature red strobe and gain-gushing guitar. Unfortunately for Tarek, there was an issue with his pedals about halfway through their intro, and his deep-fried guitar sound was reduced to the naked sound of his Reverend Double Agent. More unfortunate still was that Justin declined a drum solo and opted for an impromptu comedy routine while the techs worked their magic. Safe to say the rest of the show was better received than Justin's jokes-- no offense, Justin.
Technical difficulties aside, The Blue Stones exploded into a barrage of blues-inspired rock and gave everyone a show to remember. Blasting a mix of tunes off their newest album, METRO, as well as songs from their hit album Black Holes, and others, the show was sure to make any rock-lover's ears ring with joy.
If you're into rock bands like The Black Keys and The Arctic Monkeys, I highly suggest checking out The Blue Stones. I'd go so far to say they're The Black Keys' Canadian equivalent. For anyone into more vibey artists like Tame Impala and Goth Babe, Meltt could be your new favorite band.
